April Showers/May Flowers

After several days of much-needed rain, the last day of April was a nice day to walk part of the way home from work. After I got off the bus, I strolled through Linden Hills and spotted this little frog in someone's front yard.
This fir tree always catches my eye. It sits next to a large empty lawn where it commands attention. The bush below (photo'd on a different day) always intriques me. Don't most trees sprout leaves before flowers?
Here's a close-up of the flower:
Closer to home, another bush blooms in much the same way, but the "flowers" are unusual.

Looks like a pussywillow bush, if there is such a thing. You can tell I'm no plant expert, lol!

After The Fire

Just a brief post to show you the progress being made on the townhouses that were damaged by fire a few weeks ago. Two of the five units and three of the garages have been torn down. I guess that's the good news, because I was wondering if any of them could be saved. I haven't heard if the cause of the fire has been determined.

Remember, you can find related stories by clicking on the labels below or in the list along the right-hand side.

Up With The Rooster

With the early hours I've been getting up, I thought this would be the appropriate card to make for Taylor's Cupcake Challenge.
Patterned paper DCWV
Checkerboard and picket fence edge punches by Martha Stewart
Rooster stamp by Anne Griffin for All Night Media
Colored with watercolor pencils and blender pen, a little marker and glitter gel pen
Button tied with twine before attaching with glue

Paris Egg

I thought this would be an appropriate day to post a photo of one of my fave salt and pepper shakers. It's unique in my collection. I found it in a little shop at the TOP of the Eiffel Tower when G and I went there on his graduation trip in 2001. It starts out as an egg....

.....then opens to reveal a chick inside! The chick is the shaker (it can be taken out of the egg), so I have to assume it is the pepper shaker, and that the empty egg is a salt cellar.

One side note - I have talked to several people who have been to Paris, but did not take the elevator up to check out the view from the tower. That was because they were visiting someone, and apparently Parisians consider the trip up too touristy. The view of Paris spread out for miles was reward enough, but adding the little S&P shaker to my collection was a definite bonus!

Peaceful Easter

I was up before dawn today so I could eat breakfast at Mom's church and attend the early service. My first week of work was practice for getting up early, but the four felines decided I needed to be up even earlier: 5:43! They must have sensed I had forgotten to wash a pair of pants I wanted to wear, so I was able to do a small load of laundry, feed them, take a shower and half-dry my hair.
This is the church where I was confirmed. There are many churches with larger, more elaborate buildings, but I've always admired the simplicity of the architecture and modern details inside. The communion railing above is one example.

Beautiful hydrangeas, tulips and mums, but no lilies today - the pastor is allergic.

The graceful steel arches are painted a wonderful sky-blue (well, maybe it's more of a turquoise, but I like to think the color is no accident).
We met up with the rest of the family and ate at one of my favorite restaurants along my old route home from work. The weather is finally leaning toward Spring. I hope you had a blessed and peaceful Easter.

Off To Work I Go

I held off posting this card until I had mailed it to my cousins S&J for their anniversary last week. S told me she loved the colors, so we have that in common. I'm comfortable with just about any color combo, but am partial to blues and greens because of the water/sky connection. If I could live ON a lake or ocean without leaving Minnesota, I'd be happy. Living a few blocks from a lake is almost as good, and I don't have to worry about floods or tidal waves! The card was made with Martha Stewart punches, a Fiskars "wave" punch, shell and starfish stamps and a PC-generated quote from the book of Luke.

As for the title of this post, I GOT A JOB!! I was just notified Friday of a 3-month temp job that starts Monday (tomorrow)! Being an optimist is a bit hard when resume after resume gets sent out into the "web-o-sphere" never to be seen again, and eliciting no responses. But, after my 2-week allergy/sinus attack was over, I finally took the assessment tests at AppleOne on Wednesday and dropped off an updated resume. Friday was my "D-day", when I was going to call them and every other agency I knew of to strongly urge them to FIND ME A JOB! Before I had a chance, AppleOne called me, so maybe that IS the result of positive thinking - and prayer!

I'll continue to blog and run my Etsy shop part-time. In fact, one business expert says this is a great time to start or grow a small business because "big" is out and small is in. She offered some tips for success, all of which I will be working on in the next several weeks. Stay tuned, and thanks for your support during my job-hunt.

Zane, The April Fool

video

I asked Zane what it feels like to be 11...

Happy April Fool's Day

March went out like a lamb, but today is a not-so-surprising surprise: SNOW! It would be a beautiful gently falling snow at the beginning of winter. In Spring, it's just an annoyance for many people, but not for me. One of the good things about not having a job is that I don't have to get up early and deal with rush hour traffic and slippery roads. Of course, I'd gladly deal with all of it IF I could go to work again!
The bushes haven't started to bud, so this shot isn't as dramatic as it could be. Today is also the birthday of my two older cats, Zane and Harley. They're 11! Because they were born on April Fool's Day, I think their names really fit - Zane (full name Zane Grey) is really zany, and Harley is a little harlequin or clown. As much as I love my cats, I don't dress them up or throw them birthday parties, but if I can get a good photo of them eating a treat later today, I'll post it.
