Crafty Desk Project and Signs of Spring

I'm back from vacation to British Columbia and will post trip photos soon. In the meantime, an organization project I had planned for my antique desk finally came together. The desk is one I inherited from a great aunt who passed away the same year I moved into my house and is one of my most treasured pieces of furniture. Over the years, I've used it less and less as a desk and more as a storage area for photo albums and camera equipment.

The cubbyholes were nice for little figurines and souvenirs and I have stuck with my camera themed storage, but, as you can see, there wasn't much organization or usefulness anymore.

My office supplies have been located in my studio for many years, so I decided to free up that space for my card-making supplies and make my desk back into a mini-office.

Above is the final result. I wanted to fill each cubby with a fitted container holding paperclips, sticky notes, etc. And I had an idea about using my patterned cardstock to brighten up the interior in a coordinated way.

I chose a 12 x 12" pad of "Sea Glass" cardstock by K&C Company.  I've had it for more than a few years, hoarding it of course, because I love beach and nautical patterns. Finally a reason to use it!

My stash of small boxes yielded five in the sizes I needed.  I simply cut the cardstock and used double-sided tape to attach it. The basket weave pattern was a great match for my tiny basket collection and the giant "Ocean" looks like building blocks.  It was a fun and easy project.

The last day of April already? It has been a slow Spring in Minneapolis - some would say a non-existent Spring - but it's been in the 70s and even 80 over the last few days. The ice on the city lakes just "went out" over the weekend.

It was a beautiful day to go for a morning walk.

Happy Year Of The Snake Card

2013 is the Chinese Year of the Snake.  My friend Joanne was born in that year (as were I and two of my cousins).  She always likes the Asian-themed cards I make for her each year, so when I went to Super Moon restaurant earlier this month, I picked up a Chinese-language newspaper to use on her card.  I started by stamping the giant chrysanthemum on watercolor paper and coloring it with a Faber-Castell marker.  Gold metallic ink was penned over that.  I cut out the flower, layered it over the newsprint and black/red handmade paper.

I backed three postage stamps with black paper, attached them over a bit of gold sheer ribbon, and added "happy", a PTI diecut.  She called to say she really liked it and I have to admit it's one of my favorites too.

April Flowers

Here is what we've all been waiting for here in Minnesota - some friendly flowers. So, in lieu of the real thing, I made one for Moxie Fab World's Tuesday Trigger: Friendly Flowers challenge. I used the colors, but didn't want to copy the inspiration photo exactly, so I skipped the buttons, although I sure have plenty in my supplies.

The flower is a Spellbinders "Daisy Flower Topper" die, the face is Inkadinkado Stamping Gear's "Celestial" stamp, and I also used "Swiss Dots" embossing folder by Cuttlebug, and an EK corner and edge punch.

The stem and leaf are hand-drawn and the sentiment is "Fun Letters" stamp by Recollections.  Base of card is striped cardstock cut on the diagonal.

Have a flower-filled week!
